The Anatomy of a Human Sleep Cycle

When you fall asleep, your central nervous system does not simply switch off. Rather, it orchestrates a rhythmic sequence of electrical frequencies and metabolic shifts divided into four primary stages:

Stage N1 (Light Transition)

Lasts 1 to 7 minutes. Brain waves shift from alpha to theta. Easy to awaken, occasional hypnic jerks (sensation of falling).

Stage N2 (True Light Sleep)

Accounts for roughly 50% of the entire night. Characterized by sleep spindles and K-complexes, stabilizing memory consolidation.

Stage N3 (Deep Slow-Wave Sleep)

Delta waves predominate. Blood pressure falls, human growth hormone (HGH) surges, and the glymphatic system clears metabolic toxins from the brain.

Stage REM (Rapid Eye Movement)

Brain activity accelerates to near-waking levels while temporary muscle atonia prevents acting out dreams. Essential for creativity and emotional regulation.

Why Fixed 90-Minute Rules Are Estimates

While popularized as a strict 90-minute rule, peer-reviewed polysomnography demonstrates that sleep cycle durations vary widely between individuals and change dynamically over the course of a night. Your first cycle may take 70 to 80 minutes, while later morning cycles may extend to 100 to 110 minutes with substantially longer REM windows.

How does cycle composition change during the night?

Is it better to get 4 cycles or 5 cycles?
