Our calculators operate on a modular, deterministic time engine using normalized minutes from midnight ($M \in [0, 1439]$).
A. Bedtime Calculation (Wake-Up Target)
Bedtime = (WakeTime - (Cycles × CycleDuration) - SleepLatency) mod 1440
Counts backward from the desired wake-up alarm by the sum of sleep duration and fall-asleep latency, correctly handling midnight wrapping.
B. Wake-Up Calculation (Planned Bedtime)
WakeTime = (Bedtime + SleepLatency + (Cycles × CycleDuration)) mod 1440
Adds the fall-asleep buffer to bedtime, then projects forward in consecutive cycle increments.
C. “Sleep Now” Real-Time Mode
WakeTime(now) = (CurrentDeviceTime + SleepLatency + (Cycles × CycleDuration)) mod 1440
Reads client-side browser clock at invocation. Does not store or track timestamps.
2. Default Parameter Assumptions
- Standard Cycle Duration (90 Minutes): Based on population median ultradian rhythm benchmarks established in clinical polysomnography literature. Users can customize this between 85 and 100 minutes in the Sleep Cycle Calculator.
- Default Sleep Latency (15 Minutes): The average time an adult without chronic sleep disorders takes to transition from wakefulness to Stage N1 sleep onset (AASM benchmark).
- Cycle Counts Evaluated (3, 4, 5, 6):
- 6 Cycles (9.0h): Optimal for heavy physical recovery & adolescents.
- 5 Cycles (7.5h): Primary recommendation for the majority of healthy adults.
- 4 Cycles (6.0h): Acceptable for occasional short nights.
- 3 Cycles (4.5h): Minimum emergency threshold.
3. Algorithmic Limitations & Biological Variability
Mathematical models provide structured reference targets, but cannot account for all biological variables:
- Intra-night variations: The first cycle of the night is often shorter (75–85 min), while morning cycles with extended REM sleep may last 95–110 min.
- Micro-awakenings: Brief awakenings (arousals) during the night naturally reset or slightly prolong cycle timing.
- Circadian Phase Shifts: Irregular sleep habits, caffeine consumption, and evening screen exposure shift individual melatonin secretion timing.
